It is a sign of the times: living green is a great way to be healthy.  Using items with this designation is not only healthier, but it promotes a better lifestyle.  But all of these advantages come at a price.  In fact, it can be a rather substantial price.  But you can learn how to score great deals on organic products by doing a little research and being diligent in your shopping.

The appeal of green items is that they are produced without pesticides or chemicals.  Beef is injected with hormones and antibiotics which is then passed onto whomever consumes it.  This can have a variance of side effects depending on the individual.  Fruits and vegetables are sprayed with pesticides to eliminate insect infestation, but these same chemicals can be detrimental to the health of humans.  Even washing them thoroughly may not always remove everything.  And, unfortunately, there is no clear way to distinguish if all of the harmful elements are gone.

Supermarkets have been carrying these items for years with the participating list constantly increasing.  But buyers are always looking for ways to get the positive effects of them without breaking the wallet.  There are certain fruits and vegetables that do not require as much pesticides as others and, therefore, can be adequately washed to remove anything harmful.

Tropical fruits such as bananas and papayas can be safely purchased in a conventional setting since they are not treated with as many chemicals and since their outside peel is removed this helps reduce exposure even more.

Processed foods and seafood are another area that is a waste of organic investing.  These items do not have the same guidelines imposed by the USDA and can be priced higher because of the organic label without delivering any significant positive results.

Many people are not aware of the fact that organic items go on sale just like traditional ones.  Keep an eye on the store where you purchase them and they will keep you abreast of upcoming events and clearance items.  Also, make sure to stock up on things when they are in season.  This is the time that they are at their lowest price and many can be frozen for use throughout the year.

There are times that you can get regular items that may not carry the organic label but still meet the requirements for being free of antibiotics or hormones.  These will be safer to eat than their traditional counterparts and still be much cheaper than the organic varieties.

Local farmers markets are an excellent source of foods that are safer to eat.  These are becoming more and more popular with locations springing up everywhere.  Some areas will have booths set up on weekends on a continuous basis.  This is a great way to plan on stocking up and eliminate waiting until you can make it to the organic market.  Your best bet is to either go online and do a little research or check with your county’s website for information.

It is bad enough that snack foods have the reputation of being bad for your health, so you don’t need to break your budget when you buy them. There are various inexpensive snack foods that can fill the gap while not emptying your account in the process. It is not difficult to save money when shopping for snacks, but you need some idea of what you are looking for when you enter the shop.1. Fruits and Nuts

Fresh fruits and nuts are the best snack foods, because they are cheap and healthy. The nutrients in fruit will keep you full for longer and you will need to snack less and therefore spend less money. Nuts are a great substitute for crisps and other oily snacks because they contain healthy fats and proteins. Nuts fill you up very quickly and they therefore last much longer than a bag of your favorite crisps.

    2. Popcorn

Popcorn is cheap and it isn’t too bad for you. You should always veer away from very salty popcorn because you don’t want to spend too much money on drinks to deal with the resultant thirst. Popcorn contains far fewer calories than other snacks, but you should still watch your serving size. It is also important not to be lazy by buying microwave popcorn. Buying popcorn seeds is much cheaper and they go a long way. One bag of popcorn seeds could easily provide you with over a week’s supply of snack food.

    3. Sports Drinks

If the thought of water is too boring for you, then you should buy sports drinks. They are cheaper than soda and they are better at quenching your thirst. Sodas are often loaded with caffeine and sugar and have diuretic properties that lead to a recurrence of thirst. Sports drinks are designed to rehydrate sportsmen and women and they will ensure that your thirst is quenched. It is also noteworthy that sports drinks are often cheaper than sodas, and they last much longer.

    4. Eggs

The reason why eggs have made the list is because they are cheap and versatile. There are dozens of ways to prepare eggs and the natural goodness means that you never have to feel bad about having them. Boiled eggs are a cheap snack that you can have at any time of the day with the comforting knowledge that you are eating something that’s good for you.

    5. Noodles

Cup noodles were inherited from the east a while back and they have now become established as one of the most popular snack foods throughout the world. They are the perfect snack food because they are dirt cheap and easy to prepare. The wide array of flavors means that you will never get bored and you can always throw in a boiled egg for good measure. You should, however, not do it on cup noodles because MSG and starch aren’t exactly good for you.

Snack foods can still be a part of a smart budget when done correctly!

In this economy, saving more money is more important than ever important for families trying to make ends meet. Reducing the amount your family spends on food is a simple way to put more cash back in your pocket. Here are some frugal food tips for families to save money on groceries.

Finding the Sales at the Store
Shaving money off the grocery bill at the store can be a bit of a challenge but it is possible. When purchasing fresh items, look for items that the grocery store has marked down in price with “manufacturers’ discounts.” These are typically items that are due to approach their expiration date in the near future, and the grocer is looking to get rid of these items before they go bad. You will find that these items are usually about ten to fifteen percent cheaper than similar items and, as long as you know you can use them soon, you won’t be able to tell the difference.

Another way to save is by looking for sales at the various stores. Although it may be a bit of a hassle, it may be worth it to shop multiple stores when attempting to buy groceries in order to get the best deals. Reading the ads in the paper or online can help you find out which stores have discounts on various items. You may to hop from store to store, but you can definitely save money.

You can also use membership clubs to purchase items in bulk. Bulk pricing is great for those items that you know you are going to use regularly, as long as they are non-perishable and you have a place to store them.

Storing Food Properly to Save Money
If you are like most families, a large amount of your food budget goes toward food that ends up going to waste because it was not stored properly. If you have food that you know is not going to be eaten and can possibly go bad if not possibly preserved, figure out some way to either use it or store it instead of letting it sit in the refrigerator.

For previously prepared meals, get some Tupperware and store them in the freezer. For dry ingredients like sugar and flour, get an airtight container and make sure they stay closed tightly. For fresh fruit and vegetables, figure out a way to incorporate them into your meals as soon as possible. You can also invest in freshness bags that are designed especially to keep fruits and vegetables fresh as long as possible. These bags can be a bit pricey up front, but will save you money in the long run.

These are just a few methods to help you reduce your grocery bill and make sure that the food that is already in your home is not going to waste. Saving money on groceries can be a bit time-consuming at first, but you will notice the difference in your bank account at the end of the month!
